The Roswell Project
What is the Roswell Project?
The Roswell Project is a series of community programs and activities designed to improve the overall health and wellness of the Pleasant Hill community.
How does the Roswell Project work?
The project brings together trained health professionals along with community partners from the church, community center, public and private businesses, and organizations from in and around the community. The community partners will work on creative ways to address different problems and issues that affect the residents of Pleasant Hill and the surrounding area. The project will seek grant funding to address health and social problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, crime and housing, just to name a few.
Why is the Community Center doing this Project?
African Americans are not very healthy as a group of people. We have more deaths related to diseases than any other race. Often, we are limited in the quality of health services we receive and access to doctors, nurses and other health professionals. More often than not, our health is related to other things like whether or not we have income or health insurance. The Roswell Project seeks to identify and to use services that are in the community while bringing in additional services as needed.
Where will the Roswell Project take place?
Project activities and programs will take place in and around the Pleasant Hill Community Center. Many of the programs will take place in the center or in the community. Sometimes partner organizations may be asked to host a program or an event.
Who is going to do this project?
The Project will be coordinated by Minority Health Solutions (MHS), a consulting firm that has years of experience doing this work and connections to outside resources that will help move the project forward. MHS will partner with the church, Pleasant Hill Community Center leadership, and other community partners to coordinate and conduct all project activities.
When will all of this happen?
The Roswell Project is all ready underway in our community. The Pleasant Hill Community Center recently received a grant from the United Way to work with Hurricane Katrina evacuees. That program is called the “Healthy Minds, Healthy People” program. It is a first of a series of programs offered by the project.
What is Healthy Minds, Healthy People Program?
The Healthy Minds, Healthy People Program is a series of activities designed to improve the overall emotional needs of those affected by Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
How does the Healthy Minds, Healthy People Program work?
The Healthy Minds, Healthy People Program will work very similarly to The Roswell Project. We have a number of fun activities planned to bring the Pleasant Hill community, Hurricane Katrina evacuees, and metro Atlanta together. Some of the activities are: Free Your Mind Bowling, Laugh Out Loud Comedy night, Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta Hawks and Braves games.
Is the program only for Hurricane Katrina Evacuees?
No. The program is not only for Hurricane Katrina Evacuees, but they are our main focus. We will need volunteers, community businesses, and other social service organizations to make this program successful.
When will all of this happen?
The Healthy Minds, Healthy Project starts March, 2008 and ends July, 2008.
